Healthy Cities Illawarra's
2009 Annual Awards Presentation was held on Tuesday 15th September
2009 at a gala presentation at the Sea Spray
Function Centre, Beach Road, Shellharbour.
The region's quiet achievers were recognised. Both Wendi
and her daughter, Samantha, received awards (see
article below). Presenting the award to Wendi
was the member for Shellharbour, MP Ms Lylea McMahon.
Wendi received the award for ‘Dedication in caring and
campaigning for homeless animals’.
The citation for this award read - Wendi Reis is a
well-known landscape artist, exhibiting often in the
Illawarra region. She is also a great campaigner for the
humane treatment of animals. The proceeds of the sales
of her works go towards the care of the huge number and
variety of previously homeless and un-loved animals that
are lucky enough to wander her way, two hundred of them
in recent years!
Her home is a refuge for unwanted and often cruelly
treated animals. Wendi restores them to good health and
then the search for suitable homes begins. Much effort
is taken to secure a responsible, loving home for each
and every animal to ensure they will not be abandoned
again. Often the very old and ones with health problems
stay at Wendi’s menagerie, spending their remaining days
in a very loving and caring environment. Gandhi once
said, “You can judge a society by the way it treats its
animals.” And with tireless campaigners like Wendi Reis
working for the humane treatment of animals, that
judgement would indeed be favourable. Congratulations,
Wendi!
